There are two basic types of lamps: incandescent and luminescent. With incandescent, an electrical current passes through a conductor (filament) creating a certain resistance and thus creates both light and heat. The more resistance and heat that is created the greater the intensity of light. With luminescent you have the contrary, and as the name implies, light is generated via radiant energy without creating temperature.
